Of all the posts in the He Is collection none have been as huge in my mind and my spirit as Malachi. I have felt like Jacob, wrestling with the Lord about it. I have done an extensive word and numeric study on it. The best description that I can give is that I literally feel as if scales have fallen from my eyes and I can see it, clearly. As with all scripture, we can not take a single verse and draw from it alone. We must take the scriptures around it and put it in perspective of the whole of what is being said. I encourage you to read Malachi in its entirety, then chapters Three and Four exclusively. If you are a believer, you will see how much this pertains to end time prophecy, and I wholeheartedly believe we are living in end times. I one hundred percent believe in the rapture, and I believe it will happen before the tribulation. Soon and very soon, we are going to see the King!
Malachi 4:2: But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves of the stall.
There are three ways that we are going to look at this verse. Two of them are teachings that I heard from Johnathan Cahn and they redefined how I saw it. The third is what I worked out in study and prayer and has altered my life. I will never look at this verse the same way again. I have never heard what I received taught before, it may have been, and I just do not know who taught it. I did an internet search on this scripture and the surrounding ones and did not find anything that I will be sharing, on this third view. There are so many layers to the Word, and each time we read and study, we will discover new things as the Spirit shows us. I have developed an intense passion for breaking down scripture and seeing the Hebrew, the Greek and the Spirit work hand in hand revealing His glory to us. There is not a word wasted within the covers, each one holds richness from the Lord. It is up to us to taste and see that the Lord is good.
The wings in Ruth
The Hebrew word for wings in Malachi 4:2 is kanaph and some of the definitions include an edge or extremity, a flap, (of the earth) a quarter.
Leviticus 19:9-10 When you harvest the ripe crops produced in your land, don’t harvest all the way to the corners of your field, and don’t gather the ears of grain left by the harvesters. 10 Likewise, don’t gather the grapes left on the vine or fallen on the ground after harvest; leave them for the poor and the foreigner; I am Adonai your God.
The corners of the field were the kanaph. The safety net or wings of protection for the poor. It was in the wings of Boaz’s field that Ruth was gleaning during the barley harvest. It was in the kanaph that her future husband and kinsman redeemer found her and gave her favor and protection.
The wings for the woman with the issue of blood
Kanaph also holds a meaning of a wing (of a garment or bed clothing), skirt
From the Complete Jewish Study Bible: Matthew 9:20-21 indicates that it was specifically the hem of Yeshua’s garment that the woman touched, which is an important detail from a Hebraic viewpoint. The English word hem, used in many scripture translations, refers to the Greek word kraspedon, meaning “a tassel of twisted wool.” The woman was in fact, reaching for the tassels (tzitziyot)on the four corners of Yeshua’s garment. These tassels, or knotted fringes, were instituted by Adonai when he told Moshe to instruct the people of Isra’el to put them on every garment they wore and to continue to do so through every generation. The tzitziuot are intended to remind the people of God’s commandments. (See Numbers 15:37-41)
Matthew 9:20-21: A woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years approached him from behind and touched the tzitzit on his robe. For she said to herself, “If I can only touch his robe, I will be healed.”
The tzitzit on the corners of the garment are the wings, the kanaph as we see in this second definition. She found physical healing by touching the wings of His garment.
For a complete and detailed teaching on these references to “healing in His wings”, I encourage you to visit Johnathan Cahn’s website www.hopeoftheworld.org or read The Wing of Messiah from The Book of Mysteries.
To begin looking at this third viewpoint on this scripture, I have included document uploads of the word study I did to dig into the Hebrew. It begins with the verse itself with the Strong’s Concordance numbers beside each word that is broken down. As I looked at each word, I highlighted definitions and from them I reinserted them into the verse. In doing this, the verse took on a different look and meaning than just being about healing.
But unto you that morally revere my name of honor, authority, and character, shall a brilliant ray from the east, (from the courts of His temple), of rightness, justice, virtue, and posterity, shoot forth beams and appear with deliverance, to make you whole with overspreading wings; To withdraw and remove you and you shall be brought out, risen, sent with commandment, frisking round as one no longer tied up or bound.
When I began this break down this is what I saw:
Sun – east
Arise – specifically to appear
Healing – make whole
Wings – To withdraw, be removed
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a rousing cry, with a call from one of the ruling angels, and with God’s shofar; those who died untied with the Messiah will be the first to rise, then we who are left still alive will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and thus we will always be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
For when the Son of Man does come, it will be like lightning that flashes out of the east and fills the sky to the western horizon. Matthew 24:27
Malachi 4:1-2: For the day is coming, burning like a furnace, when all the proud and evildoers will be stubble; the day that is coming will set them ablaze, says Adonai-Tzva’ot, and leave them neither root nor branch, but to you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will break out leaping like calves from the stall.
When we put this verse into context with the verses around it, and we look at other verses speaking of His return, we can see that yes, this verse is about healing here in the physical, but it is so much more, it is the believer’s ultimate healing, when we are caught up with Him and changed in the twinkling of an eye. It gives us that glorious hope of the rapture! I was trembling when this all came together, and I was able to see that He was showing me His return. As I spent time in prayer yesterday, He Is came across my playlist and as I envisioned each line with what I have written, by the time I got to Malachi the overwhelming weight of who He IS was so strong, I was on my face sobbing. He is so much greater than we can fathom. He is much more glorious that we can imagine. We will never understand who He is until we meet Him when that trumpet sounds. He is crying out for us to get ready, that He is coming! The whole purpose of this collection is to sound that cry, HE IS COMING! GET READY, GET READY, GET READY!!!! He is GREAT, and MAGNIFICENT, and GLORIOUS, HE IS THE SUN of RIGHTEOUSNESS RISING WITH HEALING IN HIS WINGS!
Included in the word study, is also a numeric study of words with the same numeric value as phrases from this scripture. It is important to remember that the purpose of tying in the numeric values is not to add to or take away from the scripture, but to show how the word is knit together as the Hebrew letters are also numbers, and when we look at how they connect from every direction, it strengthens our faith and our understanding.
