Who You Are to Me: Name Giver - Mahala'el

Hallelujah! Praise God in his holy place!

Praise him in the heavenly dome of his power!

Praise him for his mighty deeds!

Praise him for his surpassing greatness!

Praise him with a blast on the shofar!

Praise him with lute and lyre!

Praise him with tambourines and dancing!

Praise him with flutes and strings!

Praise him with clanging cymbals!

Praise him with loud crashing cymbals!

Let everything that has breath praise Adonai! Hallelujah! Psalm 150

Kenan lived seventy years and fathered Mahalal’el. Genesis 5:12

Mahalal’el is a beautiful name meaning “praise of God”. As I have been studying to learn Hebrew on a more fluent level, I sat and broke this name apart. מַַהֲלַלְְאֵל is read from right to left, with the first letter being mem, and its rendering of speech means “of”. The next three letters, hey, lamed, and lamed comprise the word “halal”, meaning “praise”. The final two letters, aleph and lamed are the word “El” which means “God”.

As we are looking at the picture of these names regarding Yeshua-Jesus, it is not a hard leap to see His life in light of the name Mahalal’el. He lived a life of praise to His Father, but more importantly, those He encountered in turn gave praise and glory to God.

Luke 18 gives the account of a blind man. As Yeshua approached Yericho, a blind man was sitting by the road, begging. When he heard the crowd going past, he asked what it was all about; and they told him, “Yeshua from Natzeret is passing by.” He called out, “Yeshua! Son of David! Have pity on me!” Those in front scolded him in order to get him to shut up, but he shouted all the louder, “Son of David! Have pity on me!” Yeshua stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he had come, Yeshua asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said, “Lord, let me be able to see.” Yeshua said to him, “See again! Your trust has healed you!” Instantly he received his sight and began following him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they too praised God. Luke 18:25-42

When someone is touched by Messiah, praise is the immediate and natural response. When others see what God has done in a person’s life, they in turn respond with praise as well. We were designed to worship, praise, and love God with all our hearts. Yeshua lived a life of praise and was the example of the life we are to live toward our Abba Father. He is the embodiment of praise.
